Acoustical properties of ancient Chinese musical bells

Ancient Chinese music bells can be traced back to the Shang dynasty (1600–1100 B.C.). In addition to their significance in history and metallurgy, they provide much insight into the design of musical instruments in the early years and continue to make important contribution to acoustics due to their unique acoustical properties and rich physical mechanisms. These music bells differ from carillo...

Partial Frequencies and Chladni’s Law in Church Bells

The rim partials of a church bell (those with an antinode at the soundbow) generate the strike pitch or perceived note of the bell. The spacing in frequency of the higher rim partials has an important effect on the tonal quality of the bell. Investigations into the partial frequencies of 2752 bells, both bronze and steel, of a wide variety of dates, founders and sizes, show a simple and unexpec...

Metris: A Game Environment for Music Performance

Metris is a version of the Tetris game that uses a player’s musical response to control game performance. The game is driven by two factors: traditional game design and the player’s individual sense of music and sound. Metris uses tuning principles to determine relationships between pitch and the timbre of the sounds produced. These relationships are represented as bells synchronised with signi...

Mechanical and Damping Properties of Silicon Bronze Alloys for Music Applications

An alloy for musical instruments should have high enough strength, hardness, specific elastic properties and low damping capacity. The high tin bronze alloys with composition 20-22 wt.% Sn has good acoustical properties, which is capable of producing long-lasting slowly damping vibrations but there is brittle materials. Cracks and fracture may appear on these materials. The study on mechanical ...
